Rates for Car Insurance

Your insurance agent hands you a bill for your car insurance.  You think that the premium is what you have to pay.  Not so fast.  Rates for car insurance do not have to be set in stone.  Just because your insurance agent says that your annual premium is one amount, does not mean that is what you will – or should – be paying. There may be discounts offered by your carrier that your agent has no idea you qualify for.  It is your job to stay informed and let him know when you think there’s a discount to be had.

There are dozens of ways to cut the rates for car insurance by 20-50%.  Yes, that’s right – as much as 50%!All you have to do to get these multiple discounts is to ask your insurer which ones they offer. Then start applying them to your own premium and watch your bill decrease.

So, what type of rate-cutting discounts should you be looking for?  Here are the most common:

  • Multiple Vehicle Discount:  If you have ore than one vehicle insured with the same company then you should be getting some sort of discount.  Keep in mind that a vehicle can be a car, truck, motorcycle, RV, or other type of motor vehicle
  • Multiple Driver Discount:  Families with more than one driver in the house, a discount is offered; especially if you have fewer cars insured than you have drivers. After all, if three of you are drivers and you only have two cars, that means someone will not on the road at all times. – and that means that  person can’t get into an accident.
  • Low Mileage Discount:  Drive your vehicle less than 7,000 miles per year and you probably qualify for a big low mileage discount.  Of course you will have to prove how little you drive through your inspection reports, but those are simple to get from your mechanic. Ask your carrier what their policy is regarding low mileage verification.
  • Multi-Policy Discount:  All-too-often people disregard the benefits of using the same insurance carrier for all of your insurance needs.  By taking out policies for your car, house, life, etc. with a single provider, you may qualify for discounts on all of your insurance needs.
  • Anti-Theft Discount:  Be sure to tell your agent about any anti-theft devices installed in your vehicle to receive a rebate or ongoing discount on your premiums.
  • Safe Driver Discount:  Why should a good driver pay as much for insurance as a bad one? You don’t have to.  If you have not had an accident or claim in awhile, be sure to let your agent know that you expect a reduction in your rate.  Plus, if you register and attend a driver safety course you may qualify for an additional rate cut.
  • Good Student Discount: Have a teenage driver?  If they are an A-student, be sure to register those good grades with your insurance carrier for a discount up to 20%! Most carriers are more than happy to reward good students with an insurance rate cut.

In addition to these standard car insurance discounts being offered by most of the main carriers across the U.S., there are some simple lifestyle changes you can make to help keep the rates for car insurance low:

  • Drive Carefully (and slowly): Avoid getting caught speeding or getting any other type of traffic violation to keep your insurance rates as low as possible. Every traffic ticket you get is reported to your insurance carrier, which could raise your premiums.
  • Keep your credit score high: Most people do not realize that their insurance carrier can use a poor credit rating to boost your insurance rates.  A bad credit score usually indicates an irresponsible consumer. Therefore, it has become common practice  for companies to periodically check a customers credit rating, and use a poor credit score as  areas on to spike their insurance premiums
  • Downgrade your car.  Te fancier the car; the more insurance you will pay on it. The least expensive car sports the cheapest insurance rates and for good reasons: they are cheaper to fix after an accident.
  • Get Married:  Single men are hot the hardest when it comes to buying car insurance. Get married and reap a discount up to 30%!
  • Move to a better neighborhood. High crime areas sport the highest insurance rates. Move to a cheaper neighborhood (or the suburbs) and get a lower rate.

Cutting your rates for car insurance doesn’t have to be hard. All you really have to do is follow the tips listed above and watch your next bill clashed by a whopping 30-50%!

Motorcycle Insurance Prices

A lot of things can affect motorcycle insurance prices, including the type of motorcycle you drive; whether or not you take riders with you; and even whether you belong to a riding organization.  All of these variables can make it tough for some people to decide which policy is best and to find the best premium price.

First, let’s talk about some of the things you should consider before shopping for motorcycle insurance:

Your Bike

The type of bike you drive will have the most to do with how much insurance will cost to cover it – and you.  A small or midsize commuter motorcycle could cost as little as $200 a year to ensure; while a high-powered sport racer can cost  five to ten times that much to insure. The reason is twofold: higher priced bikes cost more to repair in the event of an accident and the more power your bike has, the more likely you are to be involved in an accident in the first place.  Those two things alone can send your premiums skyrocketing.

The Coverage You Need

Another thing that can affect your bottom line when it comes to getting solid motorcycle insurance prices is the type of coverage you need.  Not every policy is equal and thus not every price is the same (or even close).  Some of the more important things to consider when determining exactly the coverage you will need are:

  • Who will be riding on the bike.  If you plan on being a sole rider then your premium will be lower. Of course, if you do not buy passenger insurance coverage, then you will NEVER be able to take a passenger along for a ride. Still, for those who ride alone, getting rid of those passenger premiums can save you a few bucks.
  • Whether or not you need comprehensive and collision insurance. Smaller, less expensive bikes can usually be fixed (or even replaced) much more cheaply when covering them with comprehensive collision insurance is.  Compare the cost of the two and consider what the odds are that you will need to file a claim before dropping any coverage.
  • If you have a loan on the bike.  If you borrowed money to purchase that dream cycle, then you may be required to carry a full line of coverage.  See your lender for details.
  • What your state laws are.  In some states every motorcycle must be insured with a standard package that includes passenger service; health coverage, and more.  Your insurance agent should be able to easily outline the coverage you must carry by law and what coverage items you can waive.

Whether or Not You Belong to Motorcycle Club or Association

Believe it or not, belonging to a certified motorcycle group like Motorcycle Safety Foundation may qualify you for insurance discounts. Be sure to check with your carrier about nay safety course discounts or organizational discounts available in your area.

Your Driving History

Another main premium component is your own driving history – and not just your cycle driving, but your complete driving history.  The better you drive, the less you will pay for any vehicle insurance – including the coverage you need for your motorcycle.  Keep claims at a minimum and don’t get any tickets for awhile and you can ask for a safe driver discount for both your motorcycle and standard car insurance policies.

Your Credit History

Many insurers are now standing by the notion that those who are responsible for paying their bills on time are also more responsible when it comes to their driving and safety habits.  Simply keeping your credit score high can help save you 10-20% on your insurance coverage.

Once you have determined the type of coverage you will need and use some of the tips listed above to trim your liability costs, it is time to begin looking for the best carrier and the best policy in the industry has to offer. When shopping around for motorcycle insurance, be sure to compare like polices, which include basically the same coverage items. Then ask about such important things as whether or not the company handles claims 24/7; what their average claim time is; and what filing a claim will do to your future premiums. Armed with this important information, you will be better able to choose the right policy and the right provider at the right price to handle you motorcycle insurance needs.

Low Car Insurance for Young Drivers

Teens are notorious for getting into fender benders.  From small dents and dings to full fledged accidents, a teen driver’s rate of auto accidents is three times higher than for someone in their early 20’s.  This, of course, causes insurance rates to skyrocket across the board, affecting even the best young driver.

While you probably won’t be able to find cut-rate insurance for your teen, you should be able to negotiate a better deal if you are willing to make a few policy adjustments and sacrifices.

First, it is important to understand why your teen drivers insurance costs are so much higher than your own.  Not only do young drivers have a much higher accident rate (with boys under the age of 25 being involved in many more accidents than even their female counterparts), but also because of their lack of experience.  Car insurance rates have the tendency to be lowered after a period of responsibility which results in no accidents over a period of time.  Since younger drivers have not had the ability establish a good track record with their insurance carrier, they will almost always be considered high risk for the first few years that they are behind the wheel.

Secondly, it is vital to understand what you can do to help lower those high young driver rates.  Not all of the options listed below will be popular with your teen, but they will help to keep some money in your wallet:

  • Limit your young driver’s time behind the wheel:  by listing your young driver as an occasional river instead of a primary one on your insurance policy, you should be able to pay a bit less in premiums. Of course this means that he/she will not be able to drive as much as they may like.  Occasional drivers normally clock less than 10,000 miles per year.  Of course, the less your teenager drivers, the less chance they have of being involved in an accident, which will also help keep your rates lower.
  • Buy your teen a clunker.  This serves several purposes. First, an older sedan type vehicle is cheaper to insure compared to a sportier model or SUV. Why? Because they are cheaper to fix when banged up.  Secondly, if you give your teen an old clunker to drive you probably won’t have a need for expensive collision insurance since the premium will likely cost more than to replace the car in the event of a serious accident.
  • Require the completion of a driver’s safety course for your teen.  Passing any type of safe driving course can help to lower young driver rates by as much as 20%. This can be a driver’s education course offered at their school or a private safety course found in the community.
  • Require at least a B-average in school.  The better your student driver’s grades, the deeper discount you can enjoy on their auto insurance. Most carriers now acknowledge that good students tend to be more responsible in all areas of their lives – including when they drive, and therefore are involved in fewer accidents.
  • Insist that your teens keep friends out of the car when they are driving.  While driving alone or with just one good friend will not qualify you for an insurance rate cut, the less distractions your young driver has with friends in the car, the safer they will drive and the les accidents they will be involved in.  Fewer (or no accidents) means lower insurance rates down the line.  Every year your teen can go without an insurance claim, the cheaper their insurances premiums will become.
  • Restrict cell phone use in the car. While you are at it, prohibit all cell phone use while driving.  Talking and texting have been proven to distract young drivers at a rate equal to a drunken adult driver.
  • Limiting your claims. Remember, every claim you make is held against your young driver. So, if they back into your own back fence, pay for the fix out of your own pocket.
  • Increase your deductible.  Sure it will cost you more if your teen is involved in an accident, but it could save you big bucks over the long haul in insurance premiums.

Insurance for young drivers can certainly break the bank if you are not careful. But following just a few of these simple strategies and you can enjoy a deep discount on your young driver auto rates.  And that won’t just save your bottom line, but their as well when they move out on their own and have to pay those insurance bills themselves.

High Performance Car Insurance

It is sleek, fast and ohhh sooo sporty. It is everything you have dreamed of since your dad handed you your first set of keys…so, you have finally purchased the car of your dreams. Congratulations!  But now you have to deal with the daily issues of owning such a wonderful car – like getting the right high performance insurance coverage.

High performance vehicles deserve more than premium gasoline and care; they deserve premium insurance coverage as well.  And, if you have financed that new car, then your lender will insist that you take out a high performance insurance policy to cover their investment.  And that, dear sports car owner can be expensive – very, very expensive.

Why the added cost for insurance for high performance vehicles? The answer is simple: they cost more to fix.  But having a high performance vehicle is not the only thing that can jack up your insurance costs.  How fast the car can go, its safety features and upgrades and your own driving habits will all be considered when rating your policy.  Here are some of the main things to consider when choosing that dream car:

The Speed of the Vehicle

How fast a high performance vehicle can go can have a tremendous impact on your insurance rates.  Statistics how those faster running cars are in more accidents and since higher speeds cause more damage, the cost of repairs can be quite pricey.  Unfortunately, those statistics will ultimately raise the cost of insuring this type of vehicle.

The Availability of Parts

Is it hard to find replacement parts for your vehicle? If so, plan on spending more for insurance. Why? Because if that car is involved in an accident and you make a claim, it is up to your insurance company to pay to find those hard-to-get parts and that search can be costly.

The Extras on Your Car

All of those bells and whistles are nice on any car – but especially a high performance car. Unfortunately they too can cost you in the long run when it comes to insuring that vehicle. The reason is simply this: the more extras that can get broken (and need fixing or replacement) due to an accident will cost you when it comes to setting a price for your insurance coverage.

Ways to Save Money on High Performance Vehicle Insurance

Of course, some high performance vehicles can also save you money on insurance under the right conditions. Here are a few ways to cut back on those high priced premiums:
  • Drive your car on special occasions only.  Keeping the mileage low can save you big bucks on insurance. After all, you can not get into an accident if you are not on the road much. That does not mean you can not every drive your new car. Just keep your driving to less than 10,000 miles per year.
  • Have a high quality security system installed in your car. This will keep theft at bay and can qualify you for a discount on your insurance.
  • Avoid traffic violations.  Having a car that can reach top speeds may be nice, but if you are constantly getting speeding tickets, you will pay the price in higher insurance rates.  Plus, add on an accident or two and you could easily find yourself making the equivalent of that car payment in monthly insurance costs.  Obey all traffic rules and keep your record clean for the best rates.
When shopping for high performance car insurance, be sure to check all available carriers and policies for the one that best meets your needs and expectations. Look carefully at any policy you are considering to make sure the discount price you are offered truly gives you the level of coverage that you need.  Many cut rate policies cut corners when it comes to replacement values, deductibles and even some overages at all.

While you are at it, check to see what the company’s customer service and claims policies look like. Paying or high end service should also mean getting high end treatment.  Failing to offer a complete package may mean that a cheaper policy simply is not worth the money spent. Going for the gold standard instead may end up being a much better deal in the end.

Most importantly, be sure to shop around for your new high performance vehicle insurance.  Not every carrier nor every policy is equal, so choose yours carefully to ensure that you get the overage and service that you deserve for years to come.

Pros and Cons of Single Limit Liability Car Insurance

Single Limit Liability is a type of Insurance under Car Liability that has one fixed amount for coverage. This is contrary to Split Limit Insurance wherein there is a pre- set amount for 3 areas: Bodily Injury per Person/Bodily Injury per Accident/ Property Damage. In this article, we will discuss more about the Pros and Cons of Single Limit Liability or Combined Single Liability Insurance for your car.

Single Limit Liability is really a plus for car owners. It combines all amounts for your totaled expenses incurred in an accident. Imagine if the damage you have done will cost so much, your single limit liability insurance will take care of the bulk of amount. Unlike split liability, you will have a limit for each injury, so you will have to pay for the excess bills.

To cite an example, if you have accidentally bumped your car into someone crossing the road, you will be obliged to pay for injuries and possibly legal suits. Will your split limit liability insurance pay for all these? Since there is a limit, you will probably be insured for a couple of hundred thousand dollars. Say for instance $300,000 for bodily injury. That’s all it will pay for. The rest of the amount, you will be forced to shoulder. If you have single limit liability, you will be able to be covered for a higher amount for all damages combined, thus, reducing the risk of selling your properties and being bankrupt in the process. Single limit liability will save your assets and your reputation as well!
A piece of advice, it is also very wise to get a Car Umbrella Insurance. This will cost a little more, say 400-500 dollars in a year. But its policy limit will range from a million to 5 million dollars! It will also extend coverage to your own home, and other valuable assets and not only for your car. So you will be at peace thinking that your house and car are insured. This, on top of your Single limit liability will extend your limit to a million or so. Going back to the case of the injured pedestrian, what if he will incur close to a million dollars in damages and legal fees? This is a reality that we often dismiss easily. In the process, we lose our homes and our dignity, which could have easily been avoided for an umbrella insurance of just 500 dollars a year!

Disadvantages of Single limit are few. The first one is obviously the cost. It costs higher than Split Liability simply because it has a higher coverage. If you are in a very tight budget, this is not the policy for you. But then again, if for instance, you are on a tight budget and you meet an accident wherein multiple vehicles are involved and you are at fault, your split liability will definitely not suffice. In hindsight, wouldn’t single liability have been the best choice?

Another disadvantage is that processing of claims may be delayed because all the damages will be charged to one amount of coverage, and in the event that many vehicles are involved and many people are injured, they have to submit all claims to the insurance agency and this will take time. Overall, it is still the best choice to have Single Limit Liability Insurance for your car.

Cheap Car Insurance for Men

Finding cheap car insurance for men is not always easy.  Statistics show that men are three times more likely to be involved in an automobile accident than their female counterparts – men under the age of 25 are at an even greater risk.  These startling statistics have caused insurance companies to take notice and action.  Today, male drivers can expect to pay far higher premium rates than other drivers on the road.

So, is it possible to find cheap car insurance for men?  Especially young men and teenagers?  The answer to that question is invariably yes. But, those lower rates may not offer the complete coverage that men need. Be sure that you understand what an individual policy offers and does not offer before signing on the dotted line.  A discount rate may not be worth the hassle should an accident occur and you need to file a claim.

When shopping for cheap car insurance, men should consider some of these cost-cutting efforts before taking on a policy with limited coverage or even dangerous gaps in important coverage:

Downsizing

Cars with more powerful engines usually cost more to insure.  That means an eight-cylinder engine will have a higher insurance rate than a four cylinder one.  The age, model and even the extra features on your vehicle can all add cost to your insurance policy. Men are notorious for choosing newer sporty “fun” cars to show off.  That is fine if you do not mind paying extra for the privilege.  If, however, you are on a quest for cheaper insurance, then you might want to consider trading it that SUV or other high-end vehicle for an older model mini-van, sedan or smaller standard vehicle that is void of all of those “extras.”

Keeping Your Record Clean

Nothing will kill am man’s insurance rate faster than a poor driving record. That includes more than accidents.  Tickets too can add dollars to your premiums.  Every speeding ticket or other vehicular infraction you get caught with is recorded and your insurance company is notified.  Just one speeding ticket or ticket for running a stop sign can add 5-20% to a man’s annual insurance rate.  Become a habitual ticket collector and you will be considered a high risk driver and pay the price for your sloppiness.  In the event you do find yourself getting a ticket, there is something you can do to help lower your rates again: take a safe drivers class.  Making the commitment to learn safer driving techniques will show your insurance company that you have learned from your mistake and they will likely rescind their rate increase after a few months.

Choosing Your Coverage Carefully

Picking and choosing the type of coverage and riders you have on your vehicle can also keep rates low.  Opt out of any non-essentials that you can (like rental coverage or even collision on older models).  Just be sure that you have the right amount of insurance to cover your expense sin an accident.  It is also important to carry the proper amount and coverage if you have a loan out on your vehicle. Check with your lender for their requirements.

Ask for Discounts

Most insurance carriers offer a myriad of discounts to policyholders; even male ones.  By utilizing all of the discounts you can, you may be able to lower your insurance rates by up to one half.  Here are just some of the most popular auto discounts being offered by the main carriers within the insurance industry:

  • safe driver discount – manage to go a certain amount of time (usually 12-36 months) without filing an insurance claim and get 5-20% off your insurance bill
  • auto theft protection: have an alarm installed in your car and get a break on your insurance bill
  • multi-driver discount:  add another driver to your policy and see your rates shrink. Married drivers typically get an even deeper discount.
  • higher deductible discount: be willing to pay a little more in the event of an accident and you can save big bucks on your annual premium
  • multi-policy discount: be willing to give all of your insurance business to one carrier and you can enjoy deep discounts on them all

At first glance, it may seem as if men pay more in auto insurance than they should, and that may be true. Lucky for them, there are ways to get cheap car insurance – or at least get their rates cut for a better deal. The trick is to be a smart consumer and an even smarter (and safer0 driver.

Son Needs More Coverage

Hello There!  I am intrigued by your illustration here and I thought all this time that Car Liability Insurance is only for damaged property. My son is the one driving our car and he is only 20. I am glad I saw this information so I can add a higher limit to his insurance. I have to call his insurance company and get a higher coverage. I understand now that there are 3 limits and it includes bodily injury. Wow! That is such a relief! My son usually goes to parties and sometimes has a couple of beers when he is out with friends and that worries me so much. I think I have learned more about his insurance now. I have talked to an agent earlier and I discovered he has very low coverage. I don’t think it is enough or him. He is too young and really isn’t that responsible yet. I would not want to end up paying or all his damages when the time comes.

He is also rather accident prone so I hope he will be a little bit more careful with his driving. He has 25/50/25 coverage now and I think I will increase it to 100 /50/100. I don’t mind spending a little bit more so I will be at peace when I sleep at night and he still isn’t home from partying.

I know I still treat him like a baby but he will be 21 years old next year and I hope he will learn more responsibility on the road. I know that if ever he will meet an accident, he will really be at fault. More often than not, he texts or calls while driving. His girlfriend doesn’t help also. She also is a party girl. I hope she will be a good influence and ask him not to text while driving or drive when a couple of beers have. It is better safe than sorry. Thanks for the very useful information guys!

Car Insurance Rate Comparison

Looking for a quality insurance carrier at a price you can afford?  Comparing rates is easier than ever these days, thanks to the many tools now offered on the internet.   From checking individual companies’ records, to getting actual quotes to compare, the internet is a wonderful way to check and see what options are available and which coverage plans will cost you the least.

Individual Company Websites

The first place you should turn to find out what types of car insurance rates are available to you is to check with individual company websites. Begin with those you know best and then Google for smaller carriers in your area. Easy to use, many carriers now allow potential customers to type in their information and receive a basic quote without being hassled by any salespeople.   Others may require you to at least talk with a sales representative in order to get an actual price quote. Of course picking up the phone and talking with agents for specific companies of interest can also yield the same information – albeit it may take a bit longer to gather.  Contacting each carrier individually will require you to compare those policies (and rates) on your own and it will take more time; but the prices are generally more comprehensive than doing it through a larger search engine product.

Comparison Engines

Don’t have time to log into individual insurance carrier websites to get the information you are after?  Let a comparison engine do the work for you.  Most big carriers now offer this simple tool on their websites as do individual engine comparison sites.  All you have to do is type in some basic information regarding your vehicles like the overage you are after; your driving record and the region in which you live. Within seconds you will have a list of insurance carriers; the products they offer and the prices they charge.  You can streamline your search to include only major carriers or ask the engine to give you rate information form even the smallest carrier.  There is no limit to how many carriers you can compare at one time.

A wonderful way to see at a glance what type of policies different companies offer (and at what price), it is important to understand that not every policy offered through this type of quick search will be equal. There are variables offered by individual companies which could alter the final price of the policy that you choose.  Always take the time to be sure that the prices you are comparing truly are for the same quality product.

Deciding Which Policy Is Best

Of course, price will have a lot to do with which policy you ultimately choose for your car insurance needs. But be careful that you do not simply choose the cheapest insurance, despite what it offers. If you do you risk not having the coverage you need in the case of an accident.

When comparing car insurance rates be sure to always:

  • Consider the companies track record: does this company handle claims quickly and efficiently?  Are they service oriented and helpful?  Will they drop your coverage if you file a claim above a certain amount?  Be sure to check for blog entries regarding a company’s approval rating or check with the Better Business Bureau in your state for complaints.
  • Check what the policy covers.  Not every insurance policy is equal. Some carriers offer very basic plans void of some of the important coverage you may need like collision; medical; passenger coverage; and more.  Deductibles can also vary greatly, which will have a big impact on how much you pay for your insurance. Choosing a cheap policy over a well-rounded policy can lead to hassle and extended costs down the line should you need to make a claim.
  • Consider the overall cost. Sure, the basic plan may seem cheap enough, but if those added riders cost too much, your final bill could be more than the other higher-priced policy you overlooked.  Be sure that the final fees are what you expect before agreeing to nay policy.
  • Check for discounts.  When checking an auto insurance comparison chart, you may see that one company charges a bit more than another. Wait! That price may not be as firm as you think. Check each carrier for discount options.  You may be surprised at how low you can get that final amount. For instance, if company A charges $800 a year for coverage, but offers a 10% multi-driver discount and a 20% safe driver discount, their final price is only $560; compared to company B who charges $680 for coverage, but no comparable discounts.

Looking for the best deal using a car insurance rates comparison chart is a great way to figure out your scar insurance options. But be careful to look at all of the variables before making your final decision and choosing a policy you may later regret.

Choosing the best pet insurance

When choosing a pet insurance policy, it's important to weigh the risks you'd like to cover and decide on which type of insurance best suits your needs. There are many types of policies available to pet owners, and not all policies are appropriate for all owners.

In 2010, Americans spent billions on health care for their pets and $250 million on pet insurance. Pet insurance policies cover a wide variety of animals but mostly provide coverage for dogs and cats, the most commonly owned pets in America (77 million and 93 million).

Pet insurance is a good idea because veterinary care has become more sophisticated, and as such is able to cure injuries and illnesses that were once an automatic death sentence for pets. As a result of the increased sophistication in treatment, costs have also increased. Having a pet insurance policy in place can spare pet owners from the painful decision of making an economically necessary euthanasia.

Understanding the coverages available for your pet, and examining what several pet insurance companies have to offer can help you purchase the policy that's right for your pet. Coverage can range from policies that reimburse just for accidents and major illnesses to policies that cover routine check-ups and visits. Here are the three major coverage types available from most pet insurers:
  • Full coverage -- Full coverage plans will provide coverage for just about all medical expense that may be incurred by your pet's care, such as regular vet visits and some drug coverage. Also, full coverage plans will pay for some of the more expensive surgeries or treatments your pet may need. This type of coverage is most beneficial to pet owners with older pets or pets who may be frequently ill. Getting coverage for an older pet can be difficult, so most pet owners should get coverage for their pets when they are young. Full coverage is definitely recommended for animals used for sporting or work purposes, as these animals are more likely to be injured than house pets. Pet insurance coverage can keep pet owners from having to pay large amounts of money in treatment for pets should they become ill or injured, so it's a good investment to make.
  • Standard coverage -- Standard coverage is a low price plan that covers routine veterinary bills such as expenses for vet visits and check ups. This coverage does not provide full coverage for the more expensive types of treatments and surgeries your pet may need if it becomes sick or injured, although many policies provide partial coverage. This type of coverage is appropriate for house pets or pets not likely to have major health problems.
  • Catastrophic coverage -- This type of coverage offers reimbursement for expenses incurred by treating major injuries or illnesses. It does not provide coverage for routine vet visits. This type of policy is most appropriate for folks who want to handle routine costs out-of-pocket, but need coverage for the more expensive treatments that may arise because of an accident. These policies tend to be cheaper than full coverage policies.

When purchasing a pet insurance policy, it's important to check the policy's exclusions and other stipulations. If you see a condition specific to your pet's breed excluded, the policy you're considering may not be the right policy for you. For policies that exclude certain conditions, you may be able to purchase a rider to the policy that extends coverage. Riders are add-ons to insurance policies that add additional coverages to policies.

Insurance companies

There are several pet insurance companies, but one of the most well-established ones is VPI Pet Insurance. Founded in 1980, VPI covers hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats nationwide. The longstanding stability of this company means that when you need a claim covered, VPI will have the funds to reimburse you for your pets' medical costs. Another often-recommended pet insurer is the ASPCA's health insurance program. The ASPCA offers some pretty good benefits with some plans, including multiple pet discounts, a $100 per year deductible and 80 percent reimbursement on most charges.

Pet insurance pros and cons

Pet owners are buying pet insurance in increasing numbers as veterinary care becomes more and more sophisticated and owners are more loath to euthanize their pets. While pet insurance can offset costs enough to help pet owners avoid the very difficult choice of economic euthanasia, policies don't cover everything and are not always a good investment. Like any other insurance policy or financial service, pet insurance had benefits and disadvantages buyers should consider before purchasing a policy.

What is pet insurance?

Pet insurance is essentially coverage for the costs of veterinary care for pets that arise from sickness or injury. Last year, Americans spent nearly $250 million on pet insurance, and nearly $10 billion was spent in the U.S. on veterinary care. Pet insurance is a form of property coverage, meaning that it works on a claims made basis, in which the insurer reimburses the policyholder for bills submitted after treatment. Pet insurance policies have existed in some form since the late 19th century but only became widespread in America after the 1980s.

Most pet insurance policies offer coverage for veterinary costs that arise from sicknesses and illnesses. Others offer coverage for theft and death. Most policies also contain exclusions barring coverage of illnesses and injuries arising from certain circumstances and barring certain treatments from coverage. What are the benefits of pet insurance? For pet owners, purchasing a pet insurance policy can have a number of benefits. In the event of a major accident or illness, pet insurance can come in handy in avoiding big medical costs. If your pet is struck by a car, the cost of treating broken bones can be very expensive. Many pet owners are forced to choose euthanasia because of economic concerns.

Having a pet insurance policy can spare a pet owner this difficult choice by making emergency care affordable. Pet insurance is very affordable, with most policies costing between $10 and $50 per month, depending on what type of pet you're insuring and the level of coverage provided. It may be best to purchase a low-cost policy that only covers the big accidents or illnesses and pay for routine care on your own. Many pet insurance policies offer discounts on coverage for multiple pets. Most of the time these discounts range from 5 to 10 percent. Some breeds of dogs and cats have problems that are common to the breed, such as hip problems with German Shepherds. Fixing these problems can be expensive, so purchasing a policy while the animal is young is a good investment.

What are the disadvantages?

Pet insurance often bars coverage for pre-existing conditions -- ones you know about and ones you don't know about. So, if you purchase coverage for your pet and later it's discovered that he has a long-standing health condition, coverage for treatment of this ailment may not be covered by your pet insurance policy. Pet insurance policies often have caps on how much treatment they'll pay for, and in some cases these caps can be rather low.

The average pet insurance policy will pay for between $2,000 and $14,000 in care per year, but some cases the cost of care may exceed this amount. Routine treatment, the most common veterinary treatment, is not covered by most standard pet insurance policies. If you want coverage for vaccinations, wellness check-ups and other routine care, you'll have to purchase an add-on to your pet insurance policy.

Pet insurance policies often have limits on how many treatments or tests of a specific sort can be covered each year. For example, some policies will limit how many x-rays they'll cover each year. Like any form of insurance, your pet policy is a bet. If your pet never gets injured or sick, you've basically given the insurer money each year for nothing. However, if an illness or injury occurs, having pet insurance may turn out to be a good investment.

When considering purchasing pet insurance, pet owners should shop around and find the policy that best fits their individual circumstances. You may also want to see if you can buy pet coverage through your company, as now about 5 percent of companies offer some form of pet coverage as a benefit to employees. For owners of some pets, no policy will be a good deal and those owners may instead want to set aside savings each month as a fund to pay for emergency pet care. Evaluate your options carefully before making a choice.

Exotic pet insurance becoming more commonplace

Last year Americans spent nearly $250 million on pet insurance. This coverage included dogs and cats, but also included policies for more exotic animals, such as chimpanzees and other pets. More than 77 million dogs are owned as pets by Americans, and nearly 93 million cats are owned as pets as Americans.

There are more than 50 million other animals owned as pets by Americans. Because of the prevalence of dogs and cats among pet owners, most pet insurance policies are most often written for these animals. Pet insurance is a form of insurance that provides coverage to pets for their veterinary care. Pet insurance helps to offset costs related to the expense of treating sick or injured pets. Veterinary care has become more sophisticated in recent years, making it more expensive, thus growing the market for veterinary insurance.

Exotic pets are less exotic than you think

According to pet insurance companies, an exotic animal is any pet other than a dog or cat. This means relatively common pets such as birds or rabbits are, for the purposes of insurance, exotic animals. Insurance companies basis this definition on the fact that exotic animals have care needs that are more specialized than those of dogs can cats. Because insurance is essentially all about probability and statistics, insurers must consider the health needs of certain animals and the chances these services may be necessary when writing insurance policies.

Here's a few "exotic pets" and some of their special care needs.

  • Rodents -- Hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils and other rodents' primary veterinary concern will be dental care, as they tend to have rapid tooth growth. Most rodents have short lifespans, although guinea pigs can live for up to seven years. Because of their short lifespan, finding coverage for these pets is often difficult.
  • Reptiles -- Many reptiles can live for decades, and pet reptiles often change owners over the course of their lifetime. Each type of reptile, including lizards, iguanas, snakes and turtles have very specific healthcare needs. Commonly, the healthcare needs of reptiles is related to feeding and nutrition, although other needs can arise. Reptiles are one of the species of exotic pets that are easier to insure, depending upon the species.
  • Birds -- Birds have a variety of health issues requiring specialized veterinary attention. The lifespan of birds greatly varies. Some live only a few years while others can live for decades. Some of the most common health issues with pet birds involve wing clipping and infections.
  • Pigs -- Pigs are an increasingly popular pet. Pigs can live for more than a decade and their specialized health problems involve digestive and breathing problems.

Obtaining an exotic pet insurance policy

Exotic pet coverage is a little more difficult to obtain than pet insurance for dogs or cats, but because of the increasingly sophisticated nature of veterinary care and the costs involved, it's a worthwhile investment. One of the largest pet insurers in the U.S. is VPI, which offers a number of exotic pet policies. Most dog or cat polices cost between $10 and $50 per month, depending on the level of coverage obtained.

Owners of exotic pets can expect to spend more on average, because of the smaller insurance pool and because of the more specialized care needs of exotic animals. In addition to a monthly premium, pet owners may also have to pay a co-pay or deductible in some cases. Most exotic pet insurance polices offer care for illnesses and injuries your pet may endure, although some injuries and illnesses may be barred by exclusion. Drug coverage may also be offered by the pet insurance plan. For routine care and care barred by exclusion, riders offering extended coverage may be purchased in some circumstances.

Some exotic pet insurance policies offer death and theft insurance, which pays the owner a benefit if the covered pet dies or is lost or stolen. For owners of expensive pets, this coverage may be desirable. Exotic pets are becoming increasingly popular among Americans. As these pets become more widespread among pet owners, veterinary care related to these animals will likely become in higher demand. Because of the specialized nature of exotic pet healthcare, these policies can help offset what can be very high bills for the care of your exotic animals.

Who needs third-party pet liability insurance

When people think of pet insurance they usually think of coverage for veterinary treatment for accidents and illnesses that may befall their pets, but there is another risk that pet owners may want to insure against -- the damage their pets may cause to others.

Liability insurance is a form of insurance that protects the insured from risks of liabilites that can be litigated in claims and lawsuits. If an insured is sued for a claim that falls within the liability insurance policy's coverage, the insurer will pay for the insured's defense and indemnify against any judgment or settlement that may be reached in the case.

Third-party pet liability insurance provides coverage for injuries that may be caused by your pet. The most common form of pet liability insurance available is dog liability insurance. There are more than 4.7 million dog bites reported annually in the U.S. More than 1,000 people per day go to an emergency room with dog bite injuries and 33 people died of dog bites in 2007. Most dog bite injuries happen to children, most of whom are bitten in the face.

We live in a very litigious society, and with the many personal injury attorneys who take cases on a contingency fee basis, there's little deterrent for folks who suffer even the slightest injury to refrain from suing if they think there's an opportunity for them to profit from a suit. Dog bites and other injuries caused by pets can leave disfiguring scars and long-term pain. Because of this, its likely that hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages or more may be awarded to a plaintiff in a civil suit regarding a dog bite.

More than $1 billion of losses related to dog bites occurred last year, $300 million of which was paid for from homeowner's insurance. Many homeowner's policies extend liability coverage to dog bites, but many do not. If you own a dog, you may want to review your homeowner's policy to see if it covers dog bites. If it doesn't, third-party pet liability insurance may be a good investment.

Aggressive breeds

While any breed of dog may bite someone, some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others. According to a recent study of all dog bite fatalities over a 20-year period, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and interbred dogs from the two breeds were responsible for three-fourths of all attacks. These breeds were responsible for nearly 70 percent of attacks on children, more than 80 percent of those on adults and almost two-thirds of the fatalities.

Pit bulls have also been in the headlines recently for attacks on children and adults. Other breeds known for aggression include German Shepherds, chows, huskies and Dobermans. Insuring one of the more aggressive breeds of dogs may cost a little more than insuring a poodle or a dachshund, but when you consider the risk involved, it's a good investment to make.

When purchasing third-party pet liability insurance, experts recommend you purchase a policy that provides at least $100,000 in coverage for injuries that may arise from a dog bite. In some cases, if your homeowner's policy does not already offer dog bite or other coverage, it can be purchased as an add-on. Liability insurance for pets is usually inexpensive, but can run up to $1,000 per year for some pets, particularly aggressive breeds or animals with a history of biting. When applying for third-party pet liability insurance, your insurer will evaluate your pet, its history of causing injury, if any, and statistical data concerning how much of a risk that pet is. Based on this data, the insurer will approve or deny coverage and set a rate.

Coverage for non-canine pets

The vast majority of third-party pet liability policies are written to cover dogs. If you need a policy to cover another pet, it may be hard to find. Nevertheless, pet owners shouldn't snap up the first policy they find that covers their pet chimpanzee or snake. Like consumers of any other product, pet owners should shop carefully and make sure they understand the terms of the third-party liability policy they're buying -- what it covers and what it excludes and how much coverage it provides. Because of the potential for losses from a dog bite or other pet-related injury, it's wise to purchase a third-party liability policy to protect your wealth from a lawsuit, particularly if you own a breed of dog that's known to be aggressive. Paying a little in coverage now could save you considerably later if a suit is brought against you.

Who needs dogs insurance?

Certain breeds of canine may be at greater risk of illness and injury than others. That's why for some breeds of dogs, buying pet insurance more than just a good idea. Veterinary care has become more sophisticated in recent decades. Illnesses and injuries that were once death sentences for beloved pets are now treatable. This treatment comes with a cost, which can be high. Some of the more sophisticated treatments of dogs such as cancer treatments or hip replacement surgery can cost thousands of dollars.

The high price of these care options, and the unpredictability of when they may be required makes dog insurance advisable for canine owners. Americans spend about $250 million per year on pet insurance, with dogs being the most frequently covered animal. Dog insurance typically runs between $10 and $50 per month and can cover a broad range of injury and illness, depending on the amount of coverage purchased.

As Americans spend more than $10 billion for dog health care per year, this insurance can be a good investment. Some breeds of canines are more susceptible to certain types of injury and dog illnesses than others. For example, German shepherds have a hereditary predisposition to hip problems. Modern veterinary medicine can treat hip problems in dogs, even to the point of offering hip replacement surgery, but these treatments can be quite expensive. Having a dog insurance policy in place can help defray the costs of expensive treatments that your dog may be predisposed to develop because of his breed. In general, larger breed dogs tend to be more expensive from a health care standpoint because larger breed dogs can require larger doses medication than smaller dogs.

Common dog illnesses

Here's a list of common dog illnesses, and which breeds are particularly susceptible to them. Eye diseases -- Quite a few breeds are susceptible to eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, etc. Some eye problems, like cataracts are fairly well spread out among all breeds, however some problems like ectropion affect a more select group of dogs, in ectropion's case, spaniels, labs and shih tzus. Musculoskeletal disorders -- These illnesses include hip and elbow dysplasia and a variety of other problems. These disorders mostly effect smaller breed dogs. Heart disease -- These illnesses include aortic stenosis, sub-aortic stenosis, mitral valve disease, cardiomyopathy, etc.

Breeds at elevated risk for these illnesses include boxers, Great Danes, terriers and retrievers. Endocrine disorders -- This includes diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Mid-size dogs tend to be at greater risk for these illnesses. Dogs are also at risk for injuries, such as injuries caused by getting struck by a car in an accident or other mishaps.

Coverages available

There are essentially three types of coverage available for dogs, and all pets covered by pet insurance. Accident coverage is the base line insurance for dogs. Just about any dog qualifies for accident coverage, regardless of his breed, general health or age. This covers car accidents and injuries that may be caused by falls, poison ingestion, broken bones, insect bites, etc. Illness coverage covers sickness related ailments.

Coverage is provided based on age and breed, and some dogs may be excluded from coverage. Some commonly covered illnesses include asthma, hip dysplasia, ear infections, bone and joint issues, cancer, etc. Routine coverage covers a variety of services, including spaying and neutering, heartworm treatment, dental care, vaccinations, etc. In general, the more comprehensive the coverage you obtain for your dog is, the more money it will cost.

When applying for dog insurance coverage, the insurer will evaluate a number of factors to determine whether they will cover your dog. Insurers will evaluate your dog's age, breed and general health, along with his medical history. This is why it's good to get insurance for dogs while they're still puppies, as older dogs are seen as a greater risk for insurers.

Pet owners seeking dog insurance should ask for quotes from several companies, as it is a competitive business and some insurers may offer lower rates or better services. Be sure to read and understand your dog insurance plan -- what it covers, its terms and what it excludes, before committing to it. Dog insurance can be a good hedge against expensive medical costs for pets, but only if you buy the right policy and the right amount of coverage.

Pet Insurance: The basics

With advances in veterinary treatment, illnesses and injuries that were once fatal to pets are now treatable. But with increased care options, there are also increased costs. Pet insurance can help pet owners defray the costs of potentially expensive pet care, and prevent them from having to make painful decisions regarding the well-being of their pets based on financial considerations. While pet insurance may sound like a new innovation, it's actually been around for quite some time.

The very first pet insurance policy was issued in the late 19th century to owners of horses and livestock. Pet insurance came to Britain in the 1940s and in 1982 the first American pet insurance policy was issued to a canine actor playing Lassie. Pet insurance may seem like a frivolous expense to some, but when considering the investment pet owners put into their animals, it's actually a pretty sound investment.

Treatment for life-threatening illnesses such as cancer can cost thousands of dollars. Having a pet insurance policy in place can greatly help to mitigate the costs of this treatment. In the U.S., nearly $34.4 billion was spent on pets in 2004, which is double what was spent a decade before then. Of that $34.4 billion, nearly $1.6 billion was spent on the purchase of pets, $14.2 was spent on food and nearly $16 billion was spent on medical care, including medicine. Today, pet insurance is common in some countries. In Britain nearly 23 percent of pet owners have insurance on their animals. Dogs are the most commonly insured animals, followed closely by felines.

How it works

Pet health insurance operates much like property insurance. The insurer reimburses the owner for costs after the pet has received veterinary care. The owner submits a claim to the insurer in order to obtain reimbursement. In general, there are two types of pet insurance policies, lifetime policies and non-lifetime policies.

Non -lifetime policies will offer coverage for treatment during a set period, but after that period some conditions may be excluded. Lifetime coverage will cover all specified conditions for the lifetime of the pet. Lifetime policies may have per condition, per year exclusions, which will deny coverage for some conditions if they occur more than a set number of times per year.

Most policies offer coverage for routine visits and emergency visits, medications, lab tests and x-rays and vaccinations. Like health insurance, many pet insurance policies work with a network of vets that the owner must choose from. Using a vet outside the network may result in a lower reimbursement or non-payment of a claim. Pet health insurance offers a variety of policies and coverages to pet owners. Owners can purchase coverage for certain treatments, like surgical coverage, or can purchase other options such as nationwide coverage if the owner travels a lot with his or her pet.

Often pet insurance policies will have discounts if multiple pets are being covered. A common discount is a 5 to 10 percent cut if the owner registers two or more animals. Just like human health insurance, pet insurers may require the pet to undergo a medical examination before offering coverage. This is why it's a good idea to obtain coverage for a pet while he or she is young, before the animal has the opportunity to develop significant health problems.

Average costs

On average, pet insurance costs between $10 and $50 per month, depending on the insurer the owner uses and how comprehensive the policy he or she buys is. Accident coverage, which covers injuries as a result of being hit by a car or other accidents for about $10 per month, while accident and illness coverage will cost between $20 and $30 per month. Many employers are beginning to offer workplace benefits that provide pet insurance at discount prices.

Third-party liability insurance

In addition to pet health insurance, many insurers also offer third-party liability insurance coverage for pets. This insurance basically covers any damage your pet may cause to others or their property. For pet owners, pet health insurance can be a wise investment that will offset the costs of extensive and expensive treatment your animal may need. Pet owners should read over all policy documents and ensure that they understand all language in a policy before signing up for coverage.

Car Insurance for First Time Drivers

Your teen can’t wait to drive and maybe after years of schlepping them here and fro you can’t wait either; until you get the quote for their car insurance. Wow!  Car insurance for first time drivers sure can be pricey – and for good reason.  Drivers between the ages of 16-19 have a three times higher chance of getting into an accident than their 20-25 year old counterparts. In addition, if your teen is a male, count on paying 20-50% more than you would for a daughter. Why? Because statistics show that young male drivers have an even worse track record on the road.  Couple these statistics with the grim facts regarding teen death rates behind the wheel and it is no wonder that car insurance companies must take a proactive stance in regards to first time driver rates.

In a quest to save thousands of dollars in claim costs, insurance carriers tend to err on the side of caution and charge exorbitant rates to their first time drivers.  That may leave parents wondering if there are any ways to cut costs and still keep their young drivers (and their vehicles) safe from harm. The answer is yes.  There are strategies you can employ to keep your rates down somewhat; but don’t expect any big savings for a few years. By then your young driver will be able to establish a track record with your insurer and possibly get their rates cut – if of course, they have managed to stay accident free during that time.

In the meantime, here are a few simple things you can do to help cut car insurance for first time drivers:

  • Get your young driver professional driving instruction.  Whether they take a certified driver’s education course at their high school or you shell out hundreds for private driving lessons doesn’t really matter.  What will make a difference in the eyes of your insurance carrier is that they have taken the time to learn the proper safety measures with some sort of driver’s education and safety instruction.
  • Buy a cheap clunker for your teen to drive.  This can save you in high insurance costs in several ways:
1. Older vehicles cost less to fix when damaged and therefore cost less to insure
2. Depending on the condition of your old clunker, you may not need as much coverage (especially when it comes to collision) as you would a newer model
3. Sportier vehicles and SUV’s tend to inspire less safe driving among first time drivers, thus causing more accidents
  • Insist on good grades.  Not only do better students drive more safely, but they tend to be more responsible behind the wheel and most insurance carriers now acknowledge that with good student / good driving discounts.
  • Prohibit talking and texting when behind the wheel.  Did you know that a teen driver distracted with a cell phone drives about the same as an adult who is drunk? It’s true. Talking and texting while driving slows down a teen’s response and can cause serious injury and accidents.
  • Limit your teen’s driving (at first).  Sure, your young driver needs practice to become a better driver, but give them time to ease into this new responsibility.  Limit your teen’s solo driving time can help you keep a better eye on poor driving habits; plus you may get a discount from your insurance carrier if they are considered an occasional driver clocking less than 7,000 driving miles per year.
  • Increase your deductible. Sure, it will cost you a few hundred dollars more if your teen is in an accident; but compared to the hundreds you will shell out each year on insurance costs, you could save a small fortune – especially if your teen turns out to be a super-safe driver.
  • Don’t file a lot of claims. Some people just love to file every little claim they can to get check from their insurance company. This is a bad idea when it comes to also insurance for first time drivers.  If they dent the bumper or scratch the floor, who cares?  Leave it be or pay to fix it yourself and keep the insurance company out of it. The more claims you file, the higher your rates will become.
Car insurance for first time drivers sure can cost a fortune. For most parents, it is important to find as many ways as possible to lower those rates in order to even allow their teen behind the wheel before college.  To find exactly what types of young driver discounts your teen is eligible for, be sure to talk with your insurance agent. They are the best source of discount information, regardless of the driver’s age.
